What is VAT?

A type of consumption tax that is placed on a product whenever value is added at a stage of production and at final sale. The amount of value-added tax that the user pays is the cost of the product, less any of the costs of materials used in the product that have already been taxed.

Service Tax is a tax imposed by Government of India on services provided in India. The service provider collects the tax and pays the same to the government. It is charged on all services except the services covered in the negative list (Section 66d of Finance Act'1994) of services & services covered under Mega Exemption Notification (Notification NO. 25/2012 ST dated 20.06.2012).

Excises are distinguished from customs duties, which are taxes on importation. Excises are inland taxes, whereas customs duties are border taxes.

 

In India, an excise is described as an indirect tax levied and collected on the goods manufactured in India.
